Description of the theft
On Wednesday, August 16, 2023, at around 7 pm, I biked home from work and parked her bike in the bike cage inside our gated parking garage. It is a 2-level underground parking garage beneath our apartment building at 2133 Stockton Street. The garage has a remote-controlled iron gate at the ground floor, and the bike cage is located near this gate. I parked my bike next to the leftmost bike on the rack inside the bike cage. I took my basket off of my bike, left the bike unlocked on the rack, and closed the bike cage door behind me. I meant to come back with my bike lock but forgot to do so after reaching our apartment. I thought it would be safe enough because the bike cage had controlled access and automatically locked upon closing and because I had observed other bikes routinely left unlocked in the cage.

At around 1 pm the next day, as I was walking past the bike cage on my way to the grocery store, I noticed that my bike was gone. I reported this to management, which didn't offer anything other than advice to file a police report and tell the management to send surveillance footage to the police once we provided them with a police report number. I was told that management would not allow tenants to view the footage.

Note: To access the bike cage, you first need access to the garage. For this you need a key fob for the apartment building's entryways or a key fob for the garage gate. Once in the garage, you need additional access to unlock the bike cage. All tenants have common entry key fobs, but not all key fobs are programmed for bike cage access. To get their key fob programmed for bike cage access, a tenant has to specifically request it and register their bike with management (we did this). This is why I suspect that the person who took my bike is a tenant or someone with access to a key fob programmed for bike cage access.
